Colin Rich and his weather balloon strike again
Colin Rich (PopTech 2010) is at it again. In his latest feat, he has teamed up with scientists from Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory and the Department of Energy to launch the Pacific Star III. The camera-mounted weather balloon was used to collect atmospheric levels of black carbon and is also being tested for radionuclides, which have been leaking into the air from the Fukushima meltdown.
Launched in Ventura County, CA, the balloon traveled over 200 miles, reaching an altitude of 131,000 feet (higher than Superman!) before it landed in the Mojave Desert 3 ½ hours later. In true Colin Rich style, he was able to capture some incredible footage from the camera attached to the weather balloon.
