World Malaria Day special: Jay Keasling on producing affordable antimalarial drugs

To commemorate the fourth annual World Malaria Day today, we're showcasing U.C. Berkeley Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professor Jay Keasling's 2007 PopTech talk. He framed his work by providing some vital stats (from 2007) about malaria:

  • 300-500 million people per year are affected by malaria,
  • 1-3 million people die from malaria each year, and
  • 90% of those deaths are children.

Partnering with OneWorld Health, Keasling has been working to combat this infectious disease by using biotechnology to synthesize artemisinin, an antimalarial remedy, and make it available and affordable throughout the developing world.
