Jesse Bloom

Science and Public Leadership Fellow 2010

Beckman Fellow, Biochemistry, California Institute of Technology

Jesse Bloom has strong interests in evolution, infectious diseases and genetic engineering. His most recent work has focused on the development of Tamiflu resistance by the influenza virus. He has also done influential work on protein evolution to engineer enzymes for biotechnology applications, where he has demonstrated how biophysical properties influence evolvability and robustness. Jesse works in Dr. David Baltimore’s laboratory on virus evolution and his research has been published in Science, among other journals. By investigating protein evolution as a complex system, his research has implications for understanding viral evolution and the spread of disease.
