Best-selling author Daniel Gilbert, the Harvard College Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, has some surprising news for you: we’re not so good at predicting what will make us happy (or sad, for that matter). Gilbert is best known as the author of Stumbling on Happiness, which details his groundbreaking research in affective forecasting—the ability to forecast one’s emotional state in the future. Gilbert’s research and short stories have appeared in numerous publications. Among other awards, he received the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology. Gilbert considers his greatest accomplishment to be, “appearing after Dizzie Gillespie on the list of Most Famous High School Dropouts.”
