Neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman introduces the concept of Possibilianism, a new philosophy that simultaneously embraces a scientific toolbox while exploring new, unconsidered uncertainties about the world around us.

Possibilianism needs a symbol, like the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but different! :-D

This was my favorite presentation at the conference. I just changed my religion on Facebook from "Pedestrian" to "Possibilian"

Brilliant!!! Finally, someone who is bringing sanity and reason to this polarizing, close-minded and hurtful debate. I don’t take David’s philosophy quite as far as he does as I feel there is room, and important reasons, for faith based religion. But I do agree we need to remain open minded to ALL the possibilities.

Acknowledging the possibilites of the unknown but ruling out religions, myths and irrational beliefs using evidence and reason sounds like Atheism to me, just a bit blurred. Atheism is simply more specific as it "rules out" by definition the possibility of god as defined by most believers, lowering it to the same degree of likelihood as the existence of a tooth fairy in the "possibility space". He tries to infer a kind of dogmatic certainty to atheists about the absolute nonexistence of a possibility, but that is not the case. Although, I can appreciate the term since it puts emphasis on the vastness of the unknown.

Possibilianism Reminds Me Of The Age Old Discussion In Job:Chapter 15, "Modern Knowledge" Always Seems Relevant To Creations Latest Crowd & Always Bares Their Stamp Of Approval Or Denial.

I think Dr Eaglemagan may consider coining a one-step-further term: probabilitism
Thank you for your eloquent articulation of that which I believe, but have been unable to express beyond my own verbal bumble and stumble conversations with the data dude and dudette (physicist and biologist) in my family.

My own fall back has been "Why not?" rather than "Why?" aka: "Before you shake your head in disbelief at what I think could be possible (because there is currently no data to support it): first show me why it is NOT possible (parallel worlds, the power of consciousness, synchronicity etc.). Until then, why not?
Something like "Possibilianism", albeit an unscientific and far less elegant version.
Forwarding this on: an act that, itself, celebrates possibility and praises uncertainty.
Let the de-cowing begin and while we’re at it, how ’bout we have a peek under that rug, eh? :) Many thanks.
As much as he argues against it, this is pretty much a rehashing and updating of agnosticism. It speciffically takes into account scientific knowledge and eliminates possibilities that way. I’d rename it Eliminationism.

This is called "agnosticism." There is nothing even remotely new here to someone with a basic highschool education.

This is pseudo-science combined with fairy tales of lore. Truly a step backwards. All these rehashed arguments presented in a "young good looking guy" suit… please. Amir
