The stars and stripes forever? Futurist and author Juan Enriquez isn’t sure of that. He cites a long history of borders, countries and flags that have changed, and warns the United States isn’t immune.

Egad. Disingenuous fool who is overly impressed with himself. A 1" deep understanding of philosophy, economics and history. His graphs, stats and comments about national identity are particularly banal and lack ANY contextualization or analytic framework. Why I worry for the next generation when they go to college and think professors like this somehow have a corner on the intellectual market. Good news is if we have done our work as parents, these shills will be seen for exactly what they are.

This guy’s arrogance and mockery of our country, and many of its powerful and proud symbols and mottoes, that hold us together, and that make us the strong country that we are, makes me sick! I have a news flash for him. The countries that have disappeared and have changed governments 10’s times have all been countries that did not have a government with the organization and balance of the United States government. Maybe that’s why The United States of America has the strength that we do even in these most tumultuous of times: economically, politically, etc.. (Checks and balances is a beautiful thing, isn’t it?) I would love to see any other country in the world, experience the terribly hard economic times that we have faced in the past, and even more importantly, the times that we are in now; show even the slightest possibility of surviving as a country. AND, by the way, Juan, in 50 years, we will still have 50 stars!! How about the past 50 years? Gain any stars? Lose any?

It is a disgrace that this man is considered a scholar of any sort.
Hmm… For those who think the USA is an entity carved in stone, and to exist in perpetuity… Take a look at the prior history of Democracies or Republics. So far, none has existed that has lived much past 200 years… Even in the Time of the end of the Roman Republic, the first Roman Emperors paid lip service to the "restoration of the Republic", maintaining that Rome was still a Republic, although operating under extreme circumstances that required a dictator in perpetuity (look up the definition of "Dictator" for the Romans. It varies substantially from that of a modern dictator). So, the good Mr. Enriquez is right when he observes that the USA is not immune from the consequences of political acts, and that many of the political acts we see today in the USA Could lead to a fragmented Republic. I realize that my comments are coming years after the fact, but so what?

Not the Danish flag and not the Norwegian flag. It’s the Icelandic flag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Iceland but doesn’t change the fact that this is a cool lecture :-)

Alex: Your patriotism is facile and naive. The Roman Republic of over 2000 years ago was every bit as sophisticated and informed as that of the United States, and guess what happened? It descended into tyranny and despotism. Our personal perspectives on history are pathetically small and narrow — certainly under a century, likely less than half that. How do you know what will happen in five years? Ten? Fifty? Don’t discount Enriquez’s thesis simply out of a misplaced idolatry of mum and apple pie.
