Kevin Starr, Mulago Foundation director, looks for the best solutions to the biggest problems in the poorest countries. He thinks all projects need to answer four questions: Is it needed? Does it work? Will it get to those who need it? Will they use it correctly when they get it? Too many bad ideas are using up our limited resources and that needs to change.

The XO laptop that Starr calls out for lack of impact, was a POS. It is supposed to be replaced by a $75 Google Android Tablet: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/05/27/negreponte-one-laptop-per-child-is-now-a-75-android-tablet/ I wonder if that will really make any difference at all. OLPC a perfect example of good intentions and bad execution being celebrated before its time.

I wish everyone would approach impact the way Kevin logically breaks it down in this talk!

Experiencing as a family the consequences of being poisoned by our domestic water system and what "impact" that had on our lives, taking 20 minutes a day to ensure the source of your water is potable is a small price to pay for safety and longevity.

Our body is made up of 90% water, and poor water quality "impacts" everything we do—-our mental and physical well being health. The LifeStraw is like an insurance policy—-how much money do American pay for insurance to protect from the unknown—does that mean you don’t buy it. I see the LifeStraw as a must for all travelers in the event of a natural disaster. This could have a tremendous "impact" on saving their life. The video over-simplified the reasons for not purchasing the LifeStraw. Countries that are socially responsible and have buying power to provide this product to developing countries should do so. Obviously, the use of the product needs to be accompanied with educational information. This video is an negative over simplification of a product that does have a purpose.
