Artist Zach Lieberman uses interactive media to inspire – and explore the relationship between technology, performance, and the body. His recent projects include an open-source eye-tracking system that allows disabled artists to draw using their eyes and a performance that includes drawn sketches that react to a visitors’ touch.

I love Zach’s talk, and this line "artist practice is … research and development for humanity" — about 50 seconds in, was one that stayed with me long after the conference. If you’re interested in the amazing Eye Writer project that is helping graffiti artists who suffer from ALS, check out http://www.eyewriter.org.

My favorite part is when Zach’s relates software and technology to breathing—if you’re here for the first time (welcome to our VSL visitors), we announce new video releases through Twitter @poptech http://twitter.com/poptech and on the blog http://poptech.org/blog—

Just discovered this (*you) via VSL. What a breath of fresh air. I found myself sitting at my desk, loudly applauding Zach (and his work) along with the video audience. Thanks.

My software developer brother remembers attending parties in Tokyo where the amusement was to make the westerner pronounce words with L’s and R’s to see which partiers could tell the difference. Yet, somehow Zach gets through the IQ/fonts section without saying "carrigraphy" once.

smart car alphabet = ‘skywriting’?
fan of ‘virtual graffitti or tagging’ not the real thing, not that a lot buildings couldn’t use art on them.
there is an art to everything, but not everything is art. let it be something different. the world isn’t flat.
thx VSL for this site. will look over Zach’s other stuff too.
btw: you know the story about the ‘re-capcha’ below right. guy got a MacArthur for that. very cool idea.
As an educator I wonder how this technology can be used with children, with and without disabilities, to develop their creativity since we are usually looking at technology as a tool for learning. It ooks like a wonderful tool to develop their creativity in many different ways within the academic field. Wonderful! !

I lead artists in the church. I don’t have any education in art – all I know is the world desperately needs authentic art and artists need to create. This was amazing to me. It moved me in ways I cannot explain. I probably couldn’t even hold a conversation with any of you, you are all SO FAR beyond my understanding and ability. But I know what I feel…and this stirred something deep inside me. What were you using to do the interactive art where people drew and then were able to move their drawings? Thanks.

As an educator as well, I am anxious to see if it will be able to be functional for children with disabilities and not alike. Technology has allowed us to monitor and enhance the development of our children by leaps and bounds. This could help with our cooking classes for the kids. Zach’s message is so inspiring!
