How to Nominate A Candidate for the Science and Public Leadership Fellows Program

Each year, with the assistance of members of our advisory network, PopTech will select up to twenty high-potential early-to-mid-career working scientists from accredited academic institutions around the world.

Candidates are eligible if they meet the following criteria:

  • Field of Research: Institutionally affiliated candidates from any field of study are eligible, but strong preference is given to candidates who are working in fields with significant interest to the nation or the planet, such as biomedical research, public health, energy, green chemistry, material science, Earth and life sciences, agriculture, ecology, oceans, behavioral and social science, computer science and national security.
  • Talent and Personality: The ideal candidate for the program combines highly promising, original and innovative work as a scientist with a passion and innate talent for communications and public leadership, although with little formal training. The right candidate is highly talented, humble, and teachable.
  • Career Stage: We seek highly promising candidates in the early chapters of their careers, typically covering the period from postdoctoral work to the securing of a tenure track position and/or the successful completion of a first research grant.
  • Commitment: Fellows will receive a significant investment in training and development will be expected to reciprocate this investment by actively engaging with the program and the alumni network over several years.

To be nominated, a candidate must submit a cover letter that includes a brief personal statement; a curriculum vitae; and endorsement letters from two academic or professional colleagues who know the scientist and his or her work well. Candidates may self-nominate, or may be nominated by a colleague.

Nominations may be submitted via email attachment to splfellows [at] poptech [dot] org. Letters of endorsement should be emailed directly by the nominee’s colleagues to splfellows [at] poptech [dot] org. PopTech will confirm receipt of the letters of endorsement as they are received.

Evaluation of candidates is rolling, and nominations will be accepted for the inaugural class until April 1, 2010. The formal training component of the program will take place in summer 2010.
