Thomas Thwaites is a London-based designer whose work examines how technology and science interact with beliefs to shape our society. In his acclaimed Toaster Project, he built a toaster completely from scratch—even going so far as to source his own crude oil to create homemade plastic. This work formed the basis of his first book, The Toaster Project, which is to be published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2011. He is also filming an accompanying television series based on the project for Channel Four. As an undergraduate, Thwaites studied economics and biology at University College London. He completed his Masters in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art in 2009, and his work, which has received several awards, has been exhibited internationally.
