Singer and songwriter Zee Avi woke up to 3,000 emails one morning and it changed her life. One of them offered her a recording contract with Brushfire Records, and the rest is history that speaks to the power of digital media to find talent wherever it is located.
Since that fateful day, Avi left her home in Kuala Lumpur to work with producers in Los Angeles. The raw self-styled webcam videos that launched her career are still available on YouTube, and she has become a vocal Twitter advocate. With a pool of influences ranging from Leonard Cohen to Regina Spektor, Billie Holiday to the Velvet Underground to Jolie Holland, Avi performs melodic, melancholy songs tinged with irrepressible optimism.
