Zoë Keating
PopTech 2009
Zoë Keating developed her now signature music—using cello and a small box of electronics —while improvising for late night crowds in her San Francisco warehouse space. Her self-produced album One Cello x 16: Natoma is the direct result of that spirit of experimentation, and rose to #1 on the iTunes Classical and #2 on the iTunes Electronica charts.
Keating started her classical education at the age of eight, continued at Sarah Lawrence College and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Italy. From 2002 to 2006 she was a member of the cello-rock trio Rasputina. In 2008 she performed her music live with the Valencia ballet, composed music for the documentary Ghost Bird and performed on Mark Isham’s score for the film The Secret Life of Bees. She has played live on National Public Radio, on television, outdoors in the Nevada desert, in medieval churches, punk clubs, and before thousands of screaming teenagers in mainstream rock venues across North America and Europe. Her new album, Into The Forest, will be available soon.
