PopTech 2020: RESET

Like organizations around the world, PopTech was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in 24 years, we are unable to bring our community together for our beloved fall forum — a disappointing outcome of the pandemic.

But times of constraint give rise to invention! We quickly pivoted to interactive virtual events and created a content series entitled RESET. This time capsule project follows a group of video essayists as they reflect on the intersection between maximum uncertainty and unbridled blue-sky opportunity to imagine a new normal. Over the course of 2020 and into 2021 we have proudly celebrated our partnerships with TechChangeGhostNoteand Eaton Hotel and Workshops. All have been wonderful guides as we navigated uncharted, yet exciting territory together.

In addition to finding creative ways to flex our convening muscle, we expanded our commitment to nuclear risk reduction. In partnership with our longtime colleagues at the N Square Collaborative, we transitioned to a virtual meeting and collaboration space, a move that significantly enhanced engagement, given one no longer had to be inside the DC beltway to participate!
In October of 2020, we were honored to join a research consortium focused on integrating behavioral and neuroscience expertise into the nuclear risk reduction sector, an endeavor that has potential to reshape nuclear deterrence theory and practice in the coming years. The consortium is anchored by the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University under the direction of Moran Cerf. Other partners include the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the Center for Advanced Hindsight, founded by Dan Ariely. The project is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
